All tube cane is personally selected. We choose it. We don't wait
to be sent what others have chosen not to take.
|

Cane sorts and vintages are not mixed.

Although we do our best to deliver you great looking cane, we differ
from other producers in the fact that we do not wash our cane. Many
manufacturers wash tube cane to look good, but many of the vital
fibres in the cane are lost, drastically reducing the life length
of your reed.

Cane is split and sorted by diameter.

Cane is pre gouged with the Hörtnagel gouging machine and
a final gouge is made with the Kunibert Michel machine.
All machines are regularly adjusted and tested to ensure an even
gouge from tip to tip of the cane.

All gouge thickness are categorised in groups with differences
of no more than 0.2mm, giving you maximum consistency with your
gouge. All our dial micrometers are by the Japanese firm Mitutoyo.

Cane
is shaped using a Hörtnagel shaping machine. See chart
below for current shapes available.
The Hörtnagel machine is superior in quality to hand shaper
tips in the fact that the gouged cane sits flat, not folded, and
the angle of the blade is set ensuring perfectly even sides.

The shaped cane is marked at the centre to enable easy folding
before binding.

Cane is separated by hardness/density. Very hard, hard, medium,
soft. (See Cane
page for further information).

We use hardness testers supplied by Reeds 'n Stuff.
